Our CM team is Disconnected
Your Question:
“How can I improve our CM ‘team spirit’?”
The Issues:
A healthy “team spirit” comes from a positive, fun-loving CM leadership. Even if you have people on your CM team who are natural producers of “team spirit,” you may see that “spirit” controlled or destroyed by grumpy, negative, or “business-like” CM leaders. Creating a stronger “team spirit” may also require spending more money; that may be a challenge that you may have to “sell” to the church leadership.
Scripture Foundation:
“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” Hebrews 10: 24, 25
Short Answer:
“Team spirit” is produced over time, and it has a significant impact on recruitment and retention in the CM team. If a team member feels a part of a successful, positive, fruitful effort, he/she will be more apt to “stick it out” when times get rough. Administrators, whether it is in education, business, or ministry, will affirm that “longevity” in the team produces great results. If your CM team members don’t stay longer than a few weeks or months, this produces a team that is either made up of “new recruits,” or a few tired “veterans.” Creating a positive, infectious “team spirit” will produce a CM team identity that attracts others to join! Improving the “team spirit” isn’t difficult. It involves having more fun, improving the communication, laughing more, and increasing the positive support you give to the team members. Humans are basically “herd animals.” That means that we are happy when we are in a group of like-minded people. Creating a CM “identity” is a powerful first step. That “identity” should be based on the “Great Commission” (Matthew 28: 19, 20), and on your CM vision statement. Team “identity” or “spirit” can be improved by establishing, and requiring team-wear to be worn by the CM team members when they are serving. Team “spirit” can also be improved by “pushing down” the challenge to CM coordinators or leaders who supervise programs or groups of the CM team. Challenging, or requiring, the CM leaders to “have fun with” their teams, or to engage them outside of church events also significantly boosts team “spirit.” For more help, click on the links below.
